My 1st Grade Poetry Journal Scrapbook


Welcome to the Wonderful World of Poetry!!  Through Poetry we celebrate a child’s emerging reading skills and their emerging confidence of reading aloud (with expression) to others.  
Poetry helps children develop their skills, such as letter recognition, sounds, rhyming words, new vocabulary, punctuation and rhythm of language. 
I use poetry in my classroom as a form of expression...through their art and their use of rhythm.

This is a work in progress.  I will post poems along with an art idea.  I am always looking for new creative ideas to go along with the poems.  If you have any ideas, please post them.  

The poems were not written by me.  These are poems that I've been collecting and using used over the years that I found in poetry books, poetry websites, etc.  I have given credit to those I know, if there is a poem without an author's name, please forgive me.  If you know who wrote it, please let me know.  Thanks for visiting!

Poetry Journal Introduction Page

I take a picture of the First Day of School.  Then, I used my digi Scrapbook software  to create the picture on sticky paper. 


START SMART WEEK 1: First Day of School Poem and Activity

To get the school house, I used the Ellison Machine.  I've had  the kids draw a picture of themselves inside the school house or I give them a picture that I've taken.


START SMART WEEK 2: Everyone Has A Name poem and Activity

The children used scrapbooking letters or foam letters to recreate their name and then they drew a picture of themselves.

I gave the students a pattern of the mirror and then I gave them a real mirror.  They had to draw  themselves...

STUDENTS RECEIVED A T-SHIRT PATTERN AND THEY HAD TO WRITE ON THE SHIRT “I CAN __________!”    AND DESIGN THEIR SHIRT BASED ON WHAT THEY WROTE THEY CAN DO.

I have a poetry notebook for each of my students, but this is INCREDIBLE! I will definately be using all of these great ideas next year. I LOVE how it goes along with Treasures too. One thing that has helped my students with rhyming is to have them highlight the rhyming words in the poems. Plus, they love being able to use highlighter markers! Thank you for sharing this!!

Hi Debi,

It's me again...LOL. Have you done an author study? I was thinking of doing poetry journal and author study next year. I for the first couple of months and then didn't continue it since I didn't have it planned out. I just looked through Treasures and found an author for just about each unit. wow. I love this. I do a poem every week and the kids always want to read old ones, and this would be the PERFECT way to keep an anthology for the year that they can keep forever.

Thank you! I've gotten a lot of feedback from the parents and they love it! They claim that it is a treasure.... The one that I am showcasing is almost 2 years old and it is almost full. I am like a kid...can't wait to start a new notebook next school year. :-)
